London to Reykjavik Trip – June and July 2016



June 3, 2016 – Ft Lauderdale to Miami to London, England

Busy day – Lots of last minute things to do

Finished up the contract on Venetian 817 and Bayview

Got Uber to Miami – lots of traffic

Check in with Virgin Atlantic was easy

Went to club – nothing fancy

Loaded up and settled in for the night

Strange seats on a diagonal – Tim and I are facing each other

Left on time

Dinner



June 4, 2016 – London, England



Arrived on time – but no gate – took 30 minutes

Fast Track – quick

Took Uber from Heathrow to Marriott Park Lane

Checked in and showered

Took long walk down to Bond Street

Found Balans and Babalu Earthai Thai Restaurant

Back to the hotel for short nap

Drinks in Concierge Lounge then subway to dinner at Balans

Had woo-woo and good dinner

Took subway back to Hotel – Good nights sleep



June 5, 2016 – London, England



Slept late – trying to catch up from being sleep deprived

Coffee in concierge lounge

Train to Greenwich

Walked around the town

To the Observatory and stood on the meridian line

Had lunch at the Gipsy Moth Pub – fish and chips and two pints of beer

Train back to the Marriott

Short nap – only 30 minutes

Drinks in the concierge lounge

Then to dinner at Les Portes des Indies – YUM!

Back to hotel and to bed



June 6, 2016 – London to Southampton, England



Up about 8 and breakfast in the concierge lounge

Packed up and relaxed until about 11

Ordered Uber to Waterloo Station

Train to Southampton

Uber to the port at the QEII terminal

Registered – saw Nathan and Allan – loaded on Regent Voyager

Nice penthouse A Suite – 1049 – larger than others with nice balcony and window too

Unpacked – lots of room – only have this suite for the first 10 days then change

Explored the ship – like this ship a lot

Tim went to work out – I napped

Had safety drill with life jackets at 5:15

Dressed and went to Observation for drinks.

To Sette Mari for great dinner – sat near the back and watched the sunset

Went to the theatre and heard show by the Assistant Cruise Director

Then to bed



June 7, 2016 – At Sea



Slept until 9:30 – felt good

Coffee in the coffee bar

To the Enrichment Lecture on England and Ireland

Lunch at the pool grill – Indian buffet – so good

Relaxed for a while in the room

Tim went to work out – I worked on the computer and the blog

We showered and dressed for the Captain’s reception.  Got to meet more of the entertainers and talk to Nathan and Alan.

Had champagne and caviar at the Captain’s reception.

To Observation for more champagne then to dinner in Compass Rose at 7:15.  Good

To the theatre for the “On Broadway” show with the Jean Ann Ryan Singers and Dancers.  This is probably the 5th time we’ve seen it and it was SUPER.  Standing ovation.

To bed as we have to get up early.



June 8, 2016 – Newcastle, England



We got up early since we have an early tour.
Coffee and muesli at the Coffee Bar.

Met in theatre at 8:15 – first group – to the bus

Alex was our guide – very knowledgeable

We drove to remains of Hadrian’s Wall – just a foundation left

Drove by Walls End – Hadrian’s Wall was originally 72 miles long

We drove to Washington and to the homestead of the Washington family – the descendents of our first President.  Pretty gardens and house.

Had tea at a tea house along with a scone.  Good

Then to the Angel of the North – a statue that has turned into a tourist attraction

Then thru Newcastle and by the Sage Concert hall.

We saw the statue to Earl Grey – and he was friends with Lord Tetley!!!!  Tea barons!

We stopped at the Sage and saw inside the large concert hall.  Watched the modern bridge swing open.

Back through the city and then a drive to the port.

We had lunch at the pool grill, then took the shuttle to the train station.

Got tickets back to Newcastle.

Walked all around the city – the old castle and fort, cathedral, and Earl Grey statue.

Got the train back to Tynemouth.  Then the shuttle back to the port.

Tim went to the gym and I updated the blog.

We dressed and went to Observation for drinks

We ate in Prime 7 and had a window table.

We retired to the cabin and skipped the show as we have to get up early.

Good night’s sleep.



June 9, 2016 – Edinburgh, Scotland



Up at 6 am – coffee in the Coffee Bar

Met our tour at 7:25

Onto the first tender to shore – long way out

Got onto bus and drove through Edinburgh to the Castle.

Castle closed so still since it is early, but our guide, Debbie, gave a good commentary

We started down the Royal Mile and she gave a great commentary along the way with several stops.

Ended up at Holyroodhouse – the Queen’s residence in Edinburgh

We left the tour at Holyroodhouse and walked back up the Royal Mile.

I bought a wool scarf.

Back to Witches House but the food was too heavy – looking for pub food.

We went back to Deacon Brodie’s Pub and had a Scottish lunch – meat pie and pints of beer

We walked through the park and Edinburgh and then to the shuttle bus – my feet and hip hurt!

Tender was there and back to the ship.

Well-deserved nap then dressed for dinner

To Observation for drinks then Compass Rose for dinner

To the theatre for the cast production of “Dance to the Hits”.  It was great and Alan and Lucy were the stars.

To bed for a good night’s sleep.



June 10, 2016 – At Sea



We slept until 9:30 and had coffee

We went to the lecture but he talks too much about Irish poetry and his family for me.

Lunch at the pool grill.

Another lecture in the afternoon – same poetry and family stuff – last one for me.

We went to the Society Club event to honor frequent travelers – caviar and champagne

Went to Observation for more champagne

Walked around the decks

To Signatures for dinner – yummy.

To the theatre to see the magician/comedian – Kristian Grey – he was good.

Then to bed – we have an early day tomorrow



June 11, 2016 – Belfast, Northern Ireland



Up at 6:30 – hearty breakfast since we don’t get back until mid afternoon

To tour at 8:10 and loaded on bus

Tim Conway was our guide – not the comedian.  Took 1.5 hours to get to the Giants Causeway

Stopped for a photo top before getting there – so scenic and green

Got tickets and entered the site – took the bus to the bottom

Fascinating – hexagonal blocks coming out of the ground.

We walked up the hill to the pipe organ and the furthest lookout.  Tim went to the top.

Had a coffee in the shop – then back on the bus

Tim Conway gave us a history of Ireland – and the impact of religious persecution is staggering – why can’t we learn from this in the US?

Back at 2:30 and to the grill for lunch.

Caught up on email and blog – relaxed for the afternoon

Tim feeling congested – uh oh!

Nap then dress for dinner.  Can’t go to Observation due to the day lilies and the pollen.  Went to Horizons – same flowers on the bar!  Got drink and walked on the deck.

To dinner early.

Then to Le Cirque L’Amour with the Jean Ann Ryan singers and dancers.  GREAT show!  I mentioned to the assistant cruise director about the pollen.  He told me others had complained.  He asked what to do and I told him to cut off the small stamin with the pollen.  He told me he would report it.

Then to bed.  Tim is even more congested.



June 12, 2016 – Dublin, Ireland



Slept until 9:30.  Tim says he is better.

I got coffee at Coffee Connection and brought it to the cabin.  Flowers there had been trimmed but not in the Internet Café!  Still have some work to do.

Hung out until lunch time.

Lunch at pool grill.

To tour at 1:10 pm – Dublin Highlights – Drove through city – Trinity College – Book of Kells

Drove through City – then St Patricks Cathedral

June 13, 2016 – Liverpool, England



Up at 6:30 – coffee – to theatre at 7:30.

On bus for 1.5 hour ride to Wales – beautiful countryside – lots of rolling hills, green, and sheep

To small town – walked around – raining – had lunch at Waterloo Hotel – talked to couple from MD

Then to Conway Castle – or Conwy as they spell it. Toured the castle ruins.  Then tea and cheese cake at café.

Back on bus – drove back along the coast of Wales to Liverpool.

Got back early so we drove through the city and along the waterfront.

Dressed and went to the TPG Event in the theatre – sparsely attended.  Andy Keith the cruise director sang

Relaxed in cabin – then to drinks in Observation.  Maurice is arranging an Indian dinner for us in Compass Rose tonight.  It was great and spicy!

Then to the Show with the singers and dancers.  They were great.





June 14, 2016 – County Cork, Ireland

Up about 7 – to coffee

To theatre to get our tickets

On bus – ride through County Cork – beautiful

To old fort first – near where the Lusitania sank 11 miles off shore.

To Kinsale – walk around – tea and scones – good.

Walked around Kinsale to the shops

Drive through Irish countryside – beautiful rolling hills, cattle, green

Back to Coyl – pronounced Cove in Ireland

Late lunch

Relaxed in cabin

To Observation for drinks then dinner with Bea Kessler at 7:15 in Compass Rose

Went to the show but the Celtic singer wasn’t that good so we left.

Relaxed in room and then to bed.



June 15, 2016 – Plymouth, England

Docked early in Plymouth.  Got up at 8 – Tim to gym.  Larry to sauna – all congested this morning.

For coffee.

I was under the weather with a sinus infection.  So Tim went on the city walk in the rain and to the Gin Distillery.  I slept. He had a good time.

He got back mid afternoon – it rained the entire time.  I had just woken up.

We went to Observation for cocktails and then to Horizons.

Dinner in Compass Rose.

This is the last night of the cruise so there is no show.  Early evening.



June 16, 2016 – Southampton, England

We got into Southampton and took our time packing from our suite 1049.  We went to breakfast.

We left the ship about 9:30 and took a taxi to the ferry terminal.  We didn’t have to wait long to get over to the Isle of Wight. 
We walked around along the waterfront and saw the “chain bridge” – a floating bridge pulled across the water with chains.

We had a light lunch and then took the ferry back to Southampton.

We got a taxi to the ship.

We enjoyed the cabin until we went to the life vest muster.  We didn’t have to go out on the deck since it was raining.

We went to Observation and then Horizons for drinks.  They have NEW lilies on board but they haven’t opened yet.

We waited in the Mariner Lounge and Vladimir came to see if we wanted to eat in Prime 7.  We accepted the invitation and had a window table.  Good dinner.

We went to the “variety show” that Andy, the cruise director, put on and it was really stupid so we left.

Back to the cabin and to sleep.



June 17, 2016 – St Malo, France

We woke up about 7 and we were already anchored at St Malo.  Beautiful harbor.

We had coffee and a light breakfast and went to the theatre.  It took over an hour for us to get off of the ship on a tender.

We loaded on a bus and went to Chateau Montmarin, a privately owned chateau.  Beautiful French and English gardens.  A 23 room chateau.  We met the owner, who used to work in the oil business.

It rained most of the time we were there but we walked all around the chateau grounds.

Back on the bus and to St Malo for a short city tour.  We heard about Chateaubriand, the writer and walked the ramparts.  Interesting commentary.

We left the group and went to a local restaurant for moules et frites and a bottle of wine.  It was good.

We walked through the city to the wharf and got the tender back to the ship.

A nap was in order.

We had drinks in Horizons and enjoyed the company of Allan and Rebecca from England.  They cruise a lot too.

We had dinner in Signatures – delicious.  Eric is back as maître d’.  He has moved from South Africa to Botswana where his wife is the chef in a French restaurant.  It was good seeing him again.

We went to “On Broadway” with the Jean Ann singers and dancers.  It was great.

Then back to the cabin and to bed.



June 18, 2016 – Concarneau, France

We woke up on the southern coast of Brittany, France.

Tender to shore – long way.

Walking tour inside the castle at Concarneau.

On bus – to Pont-Aven – artists lived and painted here

Walked around – back on bus to Concarneau

We went into the walled city and had fish soup and a bottle of wine.  Not the best but good

June 19, 2016 – Bordeaux, France

We docked in Verdun sur Mer mid morning

Took a bus and rode south through Bordeaux – Picture stops at several chateaux

Went to Chateau Tertre – tour, wine and hors d’oeuvres, lunch with fois gras – Fun table with Deborah, Steve from Chicago and Matthew and Bill.

Rode further south to Bordeaux City – walked around – beer in café

Went to Restaurant L’Entrecote – one thing on the menu – delicious – fun waitress!

Soccer match and fans everywhere

Walked back to the ship – the pollen is awful in the lounges – complained to the front desk – have the GM call me.





June 20, 2016 – Bordeaux, France

Up early – tour to St Emilion – 30 minute ride – to the town of St Emilion – we went on our own – bought wine from Clos du Jacobins 2010.  Yum!

Rode to Chateau Vessey (?) – tour and then wine tasting

Ride back to the city

Drinks out back in Horizons to get away from the pollen on the lilies.

To dinner in Prime 7 – sharing table with Sue, Carol, Carolyn and Tom.  Fun

Show with the cast – it was great

Full moon on the summer solstice – first time in decades.





June 21, 2016 – Bilbao, Spain

Docked near Bilbao – bus ride into town.  To the Guggenheim Museum.  Fabulous architecture.

Exhibits were interested especially the curved steel panels that you walked through.

Walked around outside.

Bus ride through the city to the old town – walking tour – churches and shops.

Rode back to the ship – the beach was packed.

Talked to the GM – she’ll get rid of the pollen.  But it’s still there – talked to her in person – and then all of the lily arrangements disappeared.

Went to dinner in Sette Mari – good lighter dinner

To the back deck of Horizons and talked to Alan, Nathan, and Lucy for a while.  Drinks

June 22, 2016 – Gijon, Spain

Docked in Gijon – had been here many times with DuPont

Got tickets and loaded on bus with Beatrix, or Bea.  Good guide.

Drove to Oviedo – the capital of Asturias – walking tour – churches, history, cathedral.

Saw the shroud of Oviedo – supposedly the cloth that covered the face of Jesus after crucifixion.

On bus to Aviles – to new museum – very modern but nothing like the Guggenheim.

They have cleaned up Aviles a lot

Walking tour – then to lunch – it was fun – meats, pork, eggs/fries/ham, cidras.

More walking through the park – to the old part of town – church. The founder of St Augustine is buried in one of the churches

To the market and then back on the bus – ride back to the ship.

Drinks in Horizons – late dinner at 8 – did sharing table with Carlton, Belle, Sue, and Jim – Fun but we missed the cast’s show again – we were the last to leave the dining room.

After dinner drink in Observations and then to bed.





June 23, 2016 – At Sea enroute to Cork County, Ireland

Slept until 7:30 – Tim until 9.  To lecture on Ireland, Wales and England – she was good.

Updated blog and relaxed on the ship.

To lunch at pool buffet – an Irish lunch – we had beef and Guinness pie and ham – it’s cold out.

We are in the Barents Sea now sailing to Ireland.

Relaxing day – drinks in Horizon.  Met Lily and Pierre from Miami/Jupiter Beach.  They invited us to dinner in Prime 7 but it was full so we went to Signatures.  A fun evening.

To Observations for drinks and then to bed.  Gain back an hour tonight.





June 24, 2016 – Cork County, Ireland

Up a little before 6.  Coffee – in Group 1 to go to Blarney Castle.

Tour through the city of Cork.  Then to the castle.  We were the first ones there so we immediately went to get in line.

You lay down and slide back and arch back into a hole to kiss the Blarney Stone.  I joked with others that I frenched it!  It was slimy!

We walked to the Manor house.  Then to town for Irish coffee.  Shopping.  Then ride back to the ship.

Lunch at the grill.  Then into town for a walk around.  Largest carillon on the cathedral in all of Ireland.

Coffee back on ship.  Tim to gym.  I got on conference call with attorneys with the lawsuit on Bahia Mar.  Got kicked off at 5:30.  Band played outside for our sail away. 

Dressed for dinner.  To Compass Rose early.  Then drinks.  Then “Come Sail Away” production by the cast in the theatre.  Fabulous.

After dinner drinks on the back deck of Horizons – then to bed.



June 25, 2016 – Holyhead, Wales

Up at 8 am – Docked in Holyhead.  Tim to gym.  Coffee.  Took shuttle into Holyhead.  Small town and not much there.

Back to the ship – to buffet for lunch.

To theatre at 1 for tour to Anglesey and Beaumaris Castle.  Castle never finished.  Went to chapel and walked on ramparts.

To hotel for tea and carrot cake.  Walked to the waterfront – had soft serve ice cream.  Watch out for the seagulls!

Walked the small town of Anglesey – on bus and back to the ship in Holyhead.

Dressed.  To Observation for drinks with Nathan and Alan.

To Sette Mari for dinner – Robert:  You have beautiful skin!

Back to Observation for drink. Then to Horizons for Beatles Dance Night – fun.  We danced together.

Hung out with Nathan and Alan.  One last drink and then to bed.



June 26, 2016 – Dublin, Ireland

Up before 7.  Tim did laundry.  Coffee – hung out in cabin.  Lots of people leaving the ship in Dublin.

At 11 took the shuttle into town.  Walked to the museum – closed until 2.

To Temple Bar – walked around.  Had a Guinness pint at the Temple Bar.  Listened to Irish music.

Walked around. Stopped at restaurant and had lunch – beef and Guinness pie and fish and chips.

Walked around the parks and looked at art.  To the museum to see old artifacts.

Back to shuttle and then to ship.

Dressed and went for drinks in Observation.

Dinner at Prime 7.

Then to Horizons for drinks.  We were late leaving due to delays in loading freight.

To bed.



June 27, 2016 – Belfast, Ireland

Up at 7 am.  Coffee.  To theatre and to tour at 8:30

To the Titanic Museum, close by.  Went through the displays – excellent museum.

Then to the pump house – saw the pumps that drained water from the dry dock.

Scones and tea in the pump house.

Then we walked into the dry dock.  Amazing.  Great guide – funny.

Onto bus and back to the ship.  To lunch in the buffet venue.

Back to cabin and relaxed – nap – read – Tim to gym.

Dressed and went to Observation for drinks

Dinner in Compass Rose at 7:15.

To theatre to see “On Broadway” (again) – excellent

Went to Horizons for last drink – met Omar and Michael from San Francisco



June 28, 2016 – Glasgow, Scotland

Up at 7 am – coffee – to theatre – to bus

Leslie was our guide – very informative. Drive through Glasgow to see sights

Stop at old cathedral – caps and gowns and kilts all over – graduation.

Drove more – then to Kelvin Museum – okay exhibits. Why did we schedule this trip?

Coffee – back on bus for drive back to the ship.

Lunch in buffet – Larry worked on contract.  Tim to gym.

Wifi in terminal – much faster than the ship!





June 29, 2016 – At Sea enroute to Faroe Islands

Quiet day on the ship as we sail from Scotland to the Faroe Islands

June 30, 2016 – Torshavn, Denmark – Faroe Islands

City tour – walk and ride to lookout

July 1, 2016 – At Sea enroute to Iceland

Slept late – cold, foggy and windy

July 2, 2016 – Akureyri, Iceland

Docked early in Akureyri – cold and windy.  Just below the Arctic Circle – we’ll cross it again tonight.

Camille short pre-dinner cabaret show at 6.  Fabulous.

Drinks with Nathan and Alan in Horizons – then dinner in Compass Rose.

After dinner drink in Observations – I went to bed – Tim stayed up talking.

Light out all night long.



July 3, 2016 – Isafjordur, Iceland

Docked at 8 in Isafjordur.  Gorgeous day – clear – no wind – warmer.  Beautiful scenery

I went on a “Life and Culture of Isafjordur” tour and Tim went kayaking.  Beautiful

Lunch in the buffet.  To internet café and working on contract for the house.

Beautiful sail away. 

Dressed and went to Sette Mari for early dinner.  Sat by window.  Delicious.

Then to Observation and had drink before the show.

Dancing to the Hits show by the production company.  Nathan lost a heel!

To Observation for another drink.  We gain another hour tonight so it’s early.

To bed – light outside.



July 4, 2016 – At Sea enroute to Greenland

Up at 7.  Shane signed the contract – all done – YEAH!

To Enrichment Lecture on Greenland at 10.  Excellent

Stayed to hear Bea talk on future cruises.

Dinner with the Captain, his wife and daughter – fun.  Eric and Lucinda from Houston.  And Tammy

Went to the show for a bit but the 2 women opera singers weren’t that good – we left.

To bed early as we get up.  Clocks back another hour tonight.





July 5, 2016 – Prince Kristian Fjord, Greenland

We got up at 5 am and went on deck – cold and wet.  But beautiful.

The fjord was spectacular.  Rocks, high cliffs, glaciers, icebergs, and natural beauty.

Showered about 10 and took a nap.

Lunch in buffet.

Enrichment Lecture on Greenland Part 2 at 2 pm.

Bond Show at 6!  So much fun.

Dinner in Signatures with Elaine and Skip

Went to the show with a musician / comedian – Tim enjoyed him more than I did

After dinner drink in Horizons and then to bed



July 6, 2016 – Nuuk, Greenland

We arrived in Nuuk (pronounced “nuke”) about 11.  Short tender to the short.

Lots of fog – then it cleared – then It fogged up again.

Had early lunch at the pool grill.

To our tour.  Walking tour of Nuuk and visit with a local family.  She was a character.  Delicious cakes and desserts and coffee.  “Pussy” cookies!  Fun conversation.

We walked around Nuuk – shopped and got some small Inuit shoes for the travel tree.

Went to the large statue of the founder of Greenland.  I returned to the ship – Tim walked around.

Tim went on whale watching trip but no whales – saw waterfalls and sites.

I went to Observation and waited for Tim – talked to lots of people.  The fog continues to come in and go out.

Tim returned about 8 – to dinner at 8:30 in Compass Rose.

To Cirque L’Amour at 9:30 – fantastic.  Sad that this will be the last time we see these shows – they are so good.

To Horizons for after dinner drink.  Talked to Bob from Beverly Hills, and Vinny and Bill from the orchestra.

To bed late – about 1 am



July 7, 2016 – Paamiut, Greenland

Up at 8.  Coming into Paamiut.  Not as much fog.

Depressing – suicides – used to be a city of 3,000 – now 1,400.  Shrimp processing closed up

July 8, 2016 – Qaqortoq, Greenland

Returned to ship about noon – lunch in La Veranda

Leisurely afternoon – to hot tub as we sailed out – large ice bergs – beautiful sunset and views

To Observation to watch the sights – talked to Omar and Michael – Miranda and Anton – her Birthday

To bed about midnight – we lost an hour



July 9, 2016 – At Sea enroute to Iceland

Up at 9:30 – to Enrichment Lecture at 10:30 with Hugh Neighbor

To lunch at buffet – cloudy out but smooth seas – we are almost half of the way to Iceland.  Seafood buffet cancelled since it is so cold out.  But of course they didn’t tell anyone!

July 10, 2016 – Reykjavik, Iceland

Slept until 10:45.

Arrive late in Reykjavik.  Blue Lagoon tour cancelled.

After arrival, took shuttle into the city.  Walked around – booked tours and dinner reservations.

Up very early – Pickup at 7 for Blue Lagoon

Relaxing

Noon bus back to the city

Light lunch

Relaxing nappy afternoon

Drinks at hotel - Dinner next door at Fish Market – Tim tried puffin and liked it



July 13, 2016 – Reykjavik, Iceland

All day tour to the glacier – Blue Ice – beautiful drive

Rest stop – Hot springs – glacier – inside with Thor – Waterfall - Church

Dinner at Kol near the cathedral recommended by Lily and Pierre – great

Back to hotel at 10:30 – still light out – finished packing and then to bed – early day tomorrow



July 14, 2016 – Reykjavik, Iceland to JFK Airport in NY to Ft Lauderdale, Florida

Up at 6:30 Pickup at 7:15 for transfer to Keflavik where the airport is located – an old military landing strip an hour away from Reykjavik

Transfer to large bus – easy check in at Delta

No first class lounge – voucher for coffee and snack

Load up for 5.5 hour flight to JFK

Thru immigration – I had an X but got thru quicker!

To lounge until flight to MIA

2.5 hour flight to MIA

Uber to FLL

Arrived home about 7:30 – pizza for dinner while we unpacked

Good to be home – a great adventure.
